What preparations should be made before starting a cross stitch project?

If you have undertaken a large cross stitch project then the first thing that you need to do is to manage and structure the whole pattern and the requirements. If you are organized with this you are less likely to make mistakes down the line that can cause you to undo and redo the work that you have done.

The first thing that you need to do is to get all the material in place. Get the cloth, all the colors of the floss that you will need to include in the pattern, scissors, needles and a case for keeping your work in progress. Get hold of a large cardboard and create holes in the same at one end. You can then use this to write the number of the shades of floss and attach the threads in an organized manner. This is one way where you will not have to search through the box for the exact color that you are looking for while you are counting the stitches to make.

It is a good idea to get bobbins especially if you are using some of the strands to create the picture. In this manner you can code the bobbin with the number of the shade and keep the remaining strands for use later. This is something that can help you reduce wastage.

Another thing that you may also want to do is to ensure that the length of the thread that you take at one time is neither too short nor too long. Shorter threads finish extremely quickly and can be irksome and those that are too large can get tough to manage and are susceptible to knotting.
